Basic Rules & Game Flow
This section introduces how the game of Volaire is played, what you should expect at an event, and the essential rules that guide in-play behavior, safety, and immersive storytelling.
What Is Volaire?
Volaire is a Live Action Roleplay (LARP) system that blends narrative depth, immersive environments, theatrical combat, and roleplaying. You will physically act out your character’s actions, engage in combat using foam weapons and spell packets, and influence a shared world driven by player actions.
Events can include exploration, combat, puzzle-solving, social negotiation, and ritual magic.
Getting Started at an Event
When you arrive:
- Check in with a Game Manager to pay, provide ID, and submit any required forms.
- Complete Character Creation with staff to receive skill tags, spell cards, and your event tag.
- Settle into your designated sleeping area or cabin.
- Attend Opening Ceremonies (mandatory for new players), which introduce the story and rules.
- New players must complete a Safety Course, covering combat, spellcasting, and etiquette.
After these steps, you are considered “in-play.” The game continues until Sunday afternoon unless interrupted by official Holds.
In-Play vs Out-of-Play
- In-Play (IP) – All interactions and actions your character takes in the world of Volaire.
- Out-of-Play (OOP) – Anything not part of the fictional world (e.g., health emergencies, clarifying rules, logistics).
Use the following indicators:
- White Headband – You are OOP.
- Orange Headband or Light – You are medically removed from combat.
- Fist-on-head or weapon-on-head – Universal “I'm OOP” symbol when no headband is available.
Game Flow & Reset
Each event typically includes:
- Check-In and Setup
- Opening Ceremonies – Plot introduction and safety reminders
- Active Gameplay – Roleplaying, quests, combat, downtime, and scene-based play
- Scheduled Reset – A mid-event cooldown. All characters must rest/study for 1 hour. Casters re-study spells, others prepare as appropriate.
- Closing and Check-Out – End-of-game announcements, XP submission, return of borrowed props
Gameplay resumes with the staff call: “3…2…1… Lay-On!”
The "Hold" Call
“Hold!” – Emergency pause. Everyone freezes, kneels if able, or places a fist or weapon on head. Wait silently for staff instructions.
Reasons to call Hold:
- Medical emergencies
- Environmental hazards
- Descriptive/scene-based pauses from staff
Gameplay resumes when staff calls: “3…2…1… Lay-On!”
Safety and Consent
- Volaire uses a strict Hands-Off Policy unless explicit verbal consent is given.
- Always ask: “Permission to touch?” before any physical contact.
- In-Play intensity does not override Out-of-Play boundaries. Respect is mandatory.
- Use “OOP—Check in?” if someone seems overwhelmed or upset.
Players found violating safety rules may be removed from the event.
Conduct & Environment
- Volaire is an NC-17 game. Players must be 17+ and present ID.
- No alcohol, illegal drugs, or real weapons are allowed.
- Designated areas are provided for smoking and vaping—do not smoke in-play or near others without consent.
- Theft or destruction of property results in bans.
- This is an inclusive community—discrimination is not tolerated.
Important Reminders
- Your event tag proves paid attendance—don’t lose it.
- Always carry your white and orange headbands.
- Opening Ceremonies and Safety Course are mandatory for first-time players.
- You are encouraged to be immersive—but never at the expense of another player’s safety or consent.
