Death & Recovery

Combat in Volaire carries real consequences. When your Health Points reach zero or below, your character enters a critical state. This page explains each stage of physical defeat and how you may recover—if at all.

💀 Status Progression

When damage brings your character below key thresholds, your condition changes:

Status Trigger Duration Recovery Method
Unconscious 0 HP 10 min or 10-sec shake Healing 1+ HP or shaken awake
Bleeding Out Below 0 HP (min -1) 60 seconds Healing (reduced by 1 HP)
Terminal Special effects (e.g. Assassinate) 60 seconds Healing (7th level or higher)
Dead After 60 seconds of Bleeding 5 minutes Restorative ability or spell
Spirit After 5 minutes dead Until resurrected Only via “Detect Spirits” at Circle

💤 Unconscious

You are Unconscious at exactly 0 HP.

You:

  • Cannot speak, move, or act
  • May be healed with any healing (restores to that amount of HP)
  • May be shaken awake over a 10-second roleplay count (e.g. “Shaking one… shaking two…”)
  • Automatically awaken after 10 minutes

Upon awakening, you return to 1 HP (or more, if healed).

🩸 Bleeding to Death

You are Bleeding to Death when below 0 HP (minimum -1). You:

  • Cannot act, speak, or move (except to say “Bleeding to Death” during Healing Arts)
  • Begin a 60-second count
  • May receive healing, reduced by 1 HP
  • Must be stabilized before the timer expires or proceed to Dead

Example: A “Cure 10 Elixir” restores only 9 HP. Healing 1 HP brings you to 0 (Unconscious), not immediately conscious.

☠️ Dead

If the Bleeding timer expires, you become Dead.

You:

  • Cannot act or move
  • May only respond “Dead” during a Healing Arts check
  • Remain in this state for 5 minutes, during which you may be revived

Revival requires a restorative spell or ability (e.g., “Revive”).

👻 Spirit Form

After 5 minutes Dead, your body dissipates into dust, and you become a Spirit.

As a Spirit:

  • You cannot interact with players or objects
  • You may not speak unless someone near a Resurrection Circle calls “Detect Spirits” while invested
  • If that occurs, you may respond with: “Detected”

This is a time for dramatic, silent roleplay—no combat, no mechanics.

🧠 How to Help Someone Dying

You can:

  • Use Healing Arts to identify their condition
  • Perform First Aid to pause and restart Bleeding count (60-second count to stabilize)
  • Use Field Surgeon or Master Surgeon skills to elevate someone from Terminal or Dead

🔄 Reviving the Dead

To bring someone back from Dead:

  • Use a Revive spell or skill
  • Target returns with 1 HP and enters Unconscious or Awake state
  • Further healing may restore more HP

To resurrect a Spirit:

  • Must be done at a Resurrection Circle
  • Subject to game-world rules and potential consequences (memory loss, cost, side effects)
