Timers, Counters & Durations

Many skills, spells, and effects in Volaire are governed by precise timers or require players to complete audible count-based actions. This page outlines all officially recognized durations and counted actions.

⏱️ Duration Types

Duration Type Description
Instant The effect occurs immediately. No count or timer is required. Examples: damage, status infliction, item interactions.
Timed The effect has a specific time limit, typically 10 seconds, 1 minute, or 10 minutes.
Event Duration The effect lasts until the end of the current game event or until used/dispelled.
Sight Duration The effect lasts until the caster is out of line of sight, unconscious, dead, or the spell is broken.
Dormant A pre-cast or stored effect that remains ready until discharged or overwritten. Typically lasts 1 event or as defined by the ritual.

📣 Counted Actions

Some actions require a clear and audible countdown to simulate time spent on the task.

Action Required Count Completion Rules
Bandaging (First Aid) 60-count (“Bandaging 1…10”) Must be spoken clearly and uninterrupted.
Shaking Awake (Sleep/Unconscious) 10-count (“Shaking one… ten”) Must be physically roleplayed with contact.
Cutting Out (Web/Entangle) 10-count (“Cutting one… ten”) Roleplay cutting motions; may be assisted by others.
Killing Blow 3-count (“Killing blow 1… 2… 3”) Blade must be in contact with target and uninterrupted.
Administering Potion/Elixir 3 seconds aloud Bottle must be held to lips with verbal count.

💤 Status Timers

Status Duration Ends When…
Unconscious 10 minutes The character is healed or successfully shaken awake.
Bleeding Out 60 seconds A healing effect is applied (they return at -1 HP) or timer expires.
Dead 5 minutes The character is revived or transitions to Spirit State.
Spirit Until resurrected Ends when reaching a Resurrection Circle or being summoned.

🧠 Important Notes

  • All counted actions must be spoken aloud and clearly. Whispering or rushing a count invalidates it.
  • If a counted action is interrupted (e.g., by damage, knockback, spell effect), it must be restarted.
  • Searching a body is not a counted action. If a character is unconscious or dead, you may check their items immediately (in-play only).
  • Some effects (e.g., Cleanse, Dispel, or special skills) can reduce or remove durations early.
  • If a Hold is called, timers pause and resume once Hold ends unless otherwise ruled.

When seconds matter, clarity counts. Speak your time, know your line, and play fair with every countdown.
