Glossary & Tags

This glossary defines important terminology used throughout the Volaire rulebook and in-game systems. This is a living page, updated as needed to reflect official wording from the rulebook.

Term Definition
Armor Rating The numeric value representing the amount of physical protection worn by a player, calculated by region and material.
Augmentation A magical or alchemical enhancement that improves an item, ritual effect, or character ability.
Backstab A stealth-based melee skill usable only with proper positional advantage.
Bind A magical effect that prevents movement or action.
Bound A status in which the character is physically or magically restrained.
Class Ability A unique skill or action granted by a character’s class.
Crafting A system used to create items via recipes and production points.
Dispel An effect that removes or nullifies an active magical effect.
Dormant A state in which a spell has been cast but is not yet triggered.
Downtime The period between events used for crafting or roleplay actions.
Effect A mechanical or magical outcome applied by a skill, spell, or attack.
Familiar A non-combat magical companion created via ritual that enhances a character's abilities.
Focus Component A rare component used to enhance ritual success or accuracy.
Forge Level The level of Blacksmithing or Armorsmithing required to create a recipe.
Game Manager (GM) A staff member overseeing mechanics and story.
General Spell A spell available to all casters, not tied to a specialty school.
Hold A call used to pause gameplay for safety reasons.
Invest/Divest Ritual actions used to link or sever magical connections.
Limit (Race/Class) Restrictions requiring GM approval to play a specific race or class.
Line of Sight A target is visible unless obscured by full cover or environmental effect.
Marshal A staff member responsible for enforcing game rules.
Massive An attack that cannot be blocked by weapons or shields, but can be dodged.
Mystical Resource A catch-all term for rare materials in high-level crafting or rituals.
Paralyze A status that renders the target completely immobile and silent.
Physical Web Restricts all movement below the neck; can be cut out on a 10-count.
Prestige Class An advanced class available only after level 30 and certain in-play progress.
Production Points (PP) Points used to create items like weapons, armor, alchemy, and poisons.
Prop A physical object representing an in-play item or magical effect.
Ritual A powerful magical process requiring a Ritual Marshal and specific components.
Ritual Marshal A staff member who oversees ritual casting and rules enforcement.
Sleep A status effect that incapacitates the target for 10 minutes or until awakened.
Status Effect A temporary condition that alters a character's abilities or state.
Summoning A magical action to bring forth creatures or objects.
Taint A magical attribute that defines how spells interact with the target.
Threshold A passive ability that negates all damage below a set number.
Vorpal An effect or item that enhances weapon damage or grants special effects.
Waylay A stealth attack skill used to render a target unconscious.
Weapon Skill Grants the ability to wield and use a specific weapon type.
Web Like Physical Web, this binds limbs and restricts movement below the neck.

🏷️ Taglines & Call Examples

Tagline Effect Summary
Massive Damage cannot be blocked by weapons or shields. Still dodgeable.
Sleep Trance-like state. 10-minute duration or until “shaken awake” on 10-count or 10 direct Body damage.
Paralyze Total immobility. Cannot move, speak, or fight. Lasts 10 minutes or until cured.
Poison Target is violently ill. May crawl, but cannot cast or attack. Lasts 10 minutes.
Life Drain Target may not fight or cast, only defend from killing blows.
Bind Arms are locked to the sides. You may talk and move your legs.
Agony Intense pain. You may scream and crawl, but cannot act. Lasts 10 minutes.
Entangle Prevents movement. Can be dodged or “cut out” on a 10-count.
Web / Physical Web You are frozen from the neck down. Must be cut out or wait 10 minutes.
