Crafting & Alchemy

Crafting is the foundation of item creation in Volaire. From healing potions and poisons to forged weapons and enchanted gear, every crafted item begins with skills, tools, and time. This page covers Alchemy, Potions, Poisons, and other production-based systems.


🧪 Alchemy

The Art of Alchemy: Alchemists strive to understand and manipulate the base elements of life. They create powerful compounds, elixirs, and explosive agents through specialized labs.

Alchemy Production:

  • Can be done once per event
  • Requires a valid Alchemy Lab physrep
  • Must occur at Check-In—not during gameplay
  • Production Points are calculated as:

`(Alchemy Rank × 2) + Character Level`, then multiplied by the lab’s bonus:

Lab Type Multiplier Notes
Novice Lab ×1.5 Basic kit
Apprentice Lab ×2 Moderate quality
Adept Lab ×2.5 Advanced setup
Master Lab ×3 Elite lab

Unused points do not carry over. Shelf life of created alchemy is 1 year.


⚗️ Potions

The World of Potions: Potions are easy to use, accessible by any character, and often replicate or amplify magical effects.

Potion Production:

  • Similar to Alchemy—uses Potion Skill + Level × Lab Modifier
  • Requires a Potion Lab physrep
  • Components and tags must be submitted at Check-In

Anyone may use a potion, but only those with Healing Arts can identify them out-of-play.

Examples Include:

  • Cure Light Wounds – Heals 8 HP
  • Armor 1 – Grants 5 temporary Armor Points
  • Toxin Shield – Negates next poison effect
  • Strength 1–2, Iron Will, Mage Armor – See Items & Equipment for more effects

☠️ Poisons

Delicate and Deadly: Poisoners create ingestible, contact, or gas-based toxins. The craft is secretive, dangerous, and incredibly powerful when used correctly.

Poison Production:

  • Requires the Create Poison skill
  • Uses the same point formula as Alchemy/Potions
  • Must have a Poison Lab physrep to use points after your 4th event

Types of Poisons:

  • Ingested – Requires 10 seconds of roleplay to mix
  • Applied (Venom) – Coats weapons
  • Gas – Delivered via green packet

Notable Poisons:

  • Sleep, Fugue, Paralyze
  • Life Drain, Lie, Charm
  • Venom Strike – Applies a poison via weapon swing

🧰 Crafting Skills

Crafting also includes:

  • Armorsmith – Forge and repair physical armor
  • Weaponsmith – Craft and fix weapons
  • Craftskill (Custom) – Player-defined professions (must be approved)
  • Fortune Telling – Use divination tools to predict or reveal truths
  • Evaluate – Determine value of goods
  • Herbal Lore / Poison Lore – Identify ingredients for crafting

Most crafts require tools and a workspace, such as a forge or lab. Some may also need component tags or special permission.


🧪 Physrep Enforcement

After your fourth event, a physical representation is required for:

  • Potion Labs
  • Alchemy Labs
  • Poison Labs
  • Spellbooks
  • Armors/weapons
  • Any crafted gear

No physrep = no production past Event 4.
