Costuming Guidelines

Volaire is a high-fantasy LARP with immersive storytelling and in-character roleplay. Your costume is a visual extension of your character and helps bring the world to life for everyone involved.

🎭 General Requirements

All players are expected to appear in genre-appropriate costume for the duration of the event.

Costumes should:

  • Reflect the fantasy-medieval setting of Volaire
  • Represent your character’s race, class, or profession
  • Be safe and weather-appropriate
  • Avoid modern or immersion-breaking elements

✅ Allowed Elements

You may include:

  • Cloaks, robes, tunics, tabards, belts, sashes, and armor
  • Fantasy-inspired makeup, face paint, or prosthetics
  • Phys-repped weapons, tools, and accessories
  • Symbols of your guild, trade, or homeland (if known)

🚫 Avoid These

To maintain immersion, avoid:

  • Modern prints, fabrics, or logos
  • Bright neon colors or reflective clothing
  • Obvious zippers or visible Velcro
  • Modern eyewear (unless medically necessary)
  • Athletic shoes or sneakers (unless disguised with spats or covers)
  • Electronics or glowing LEDs (unless staff-approved as in-play items)

If in doubt, check with staff before the event.

🌦️ Costuming for Weather

Events occur rain or shine, day or night. Costumes should be:

  • Layered for warmth during cold evenings
  • Breathable during daytime activity
  • Sturdy enough for forest or trail terrain

We recommend:

  • Wool or fleece base layers in neutral colors
  • Waterproof cloaks, boots, and gloves
  • Spare costume pieces to change into if soaked or muddy

🧝 Race-Specific Appearance

If your chosen race has a defined appearance, it is your responsibility to represent it visually. Examples might include:

  • Face paint, horns, or ears
  • Fur, feathers, or scales
  • Tail or claw props
  • Distinctive racial markings

You are expected to phys-rep your race’s core traits, but perfection is not required. Creativity and consistency go a long way.

🧰 Minimal Costuming Standard

To be considered in play, your costume must meet the following minimum:

  • A tunic, robe, or outfit that fits the setting
  • A visible attempt to represent your class or role
  • Covered modern footwear or acceptable boots
  • Phys-reps for any in-game equipment (e.g., armor tags, spell packets, tools)

You may be asked to adjust or upgrade your costume if it does not meet basic standards.

💬 Costuming Support

Need help? We’re here for it.

  • Ask staff if you’re unsure whether something fits the theme.
  • We can suggest budget-friendly ways to upgrade or adjust your look.
  • Many veteran players are happy to offer tips, swaps, or secondhand items.

📸 Representation and Respect

Volaire welcomes diverse characters and play styles. Your costume should always:

  • Respect cultural traditions and avoid appropriation
  • Avoid real-world religious symbols
  • Be safe for yourself and others during play

We want every player to feel welcome and seen in their creativity.
