How to Create a Character

This guide outlines the official character creation process for Volaire.

Step 1: Choose a Race

Your first step is to choose your character’s race.

A full list of playable races is available later in the rulebook. Some races are Restricted or Limited, meaning they require approval or are not commonly available.

See: Playable Races

Step 2: Choose a Class

Next, select your character’s class. A class determines what kind of skills your character is trained in.

Available classes include:

  • Fighter
  • Rogue
  • BattleMage
  • Mage
  • Ranger (Restricted)
  • Knight (Restricted)

Some classes are marked Restricted, meaning they may not be available at character creation and require in-play steps to obtain.

See: Classes

Step 3: Spend Your Starting Experience Points

New characters start at Level 5, with 500 Experience Points to spend on skills.

The Experience Point cost for each skill depends on your class. You will finalize your character sheet with staff during check-in at your first event.

Skill costs: XP & Skill Cost Table

Step 4: Meet with Logistics

At your first event:

  • You will check in and pay your event fee
  • You will meet with staff to complete your character sheet
  • You will receive skill tags, a spell sheet (if applicable), and any additional materials

You must complete this process before entering play.

Step 5: Submit a Character History (Optional)

Players are encouraged to submit a written character history to help staff integrate your character into the world.

Guidelines:

  • Histories must be submitted by the start of your third event to be considered for plot integration
  • You may not claim to be nobility, undead, or possess a restricted class in your backstory

Staff may reward exceptional backstories with roleplay opportunities or small in-game surprises.

Additional Notes

  • Characters begin at Level 5
  • Restricted classes and races require approval
  • You must be checked in and approved by staff before entering play
