++++ General Gameplay

What kind of LARP is Volaire?

Volaire is a dark high-fantasy LARP with strong emphasis on collaborative storytelling, skill-based mechanics, and personal character development. It is a blend of boffer combat, immersive roleplay, and persistent narrative.

How do I join the game?

Start by visiting the Joining the Game page, where you'll find a full step-by-step guide to character creation, registration, and event logistics.

Is Volaire beginner-friendly?

Yes! First-time players are welcomed with orientation, mentorship, and temporary leniency on physical props (physreps). The community is supportive, and the system is built to accommodate new and experienced players alike.

++++ Character Creation

How many XP do I start with?

New characters start with 1,000 XP, which can be spent on race abilities, class skills, and other character-defining features.

Can I change my class or race later?

Major rebuilds are not permitted once your character enters play, except under special conditions. Contact staff via Support Ticket for guidance.

Do I need a backstory?

While not mechanically required, a character backstory is strongly encouraged and can lead to personalized plot hooks, rewards, and deeper roleplay. See Character Backstory for help writing one.

++++ Skills, XP & Leveling

How do I gain XP?

XP is awarded for event participation, roleplay, donations, volunteering, journals, and plot interaction. See How Leveling Works for full details.

How do I level up?

Every 100 XP equals one level. Example: 1,735 XP = Level 17.

Where can I find skill costs?

All skill costs, unlock requirements, and mastery information are in the XP & Skill Cost Tables.

++++ Combat & Magic

What do I do if I flub a spell?

If you mumble the incantation or delay the packet throw past 3 seconds, the spell fails. You must re-prepare it.

Do I need a spellbook?

Yes. After your fourth event, a physical spellbook prop (physrep) is required to cast anything other than General spells.

What’s the correct order of damage mitigation?

Cloak → Spell Shield → Magical Armor → Physical Armor → Resist → Magical Health → Health See Combat Rules for more.

++++ Physreps & Requirements

What is a physrep?

A physical representation of a magical, mechanical, or crafted item. Examples include weapons, armor, spellbooks, labs, and potion bottles.

When do I need physreps?

  • Events 1–2: Not required
  • Events 3–4: Required for half benefits
  • Event 5+: Required for full function

See Game Mechanics Overview for full physrep expectations.

++++ Prestige Classes

Can I choose a Prestige Class at character creation?

No. Prestige Classes must be earned in-play through narrative, character level (30+), and GM-issued trials. See Prestige Classes for details.

Are there only four Prestige Classes?

Four are publicly known (Archmage, Runesmith, Arcane Archer, Warden), but others may be hidden and discoverable through gameplay.

++++ Logistics & Events

Where is the game held?

At Rockhill Castle in Barnesville, GA. Visit the website or Discord for schedules and directions.

What do I need to bring to an event?

  • Water, snacks, and weather-appropriate gear
  • Character number and printed sheet
  • Physreps for armor, weapons, spells, etc.
  • Any required tags, envelopes, or documents

What happens at check-in?

Submit your XP envelope, character updates, and tags. Receive your character sheet and begin your immersion.

++++ Rules & Conduct

Is there religion in Volaire?

No. The setting is strictly non-religious. Belief systems exist, but there are no gods, divine magic, or religious institutions.

How do I submit a rules question or feedback?

Use the Support Ticket System. You can also speak with staff directly at events or reach out via Discord.
